Boxing/what gloves should I buy?

Question
I am starting my boxing adventure in couple of days. I ordered a pair of 16oz. Grant gloves, but I am afraid they are going to be too heavy to start off with, but I want to be able to spar with them as well as hit the heavy bag.  I am 6'2" 240lbs.  Should I cancel my order and get 14oz. gloves instead?

Answer
Hi Reggie,
Thanks for the question.

If you're truly just starting out, then you shouldn't be looking for contact sparring anytime soon. You would be much better served learning some basics (defense, footwork, punching technique, etc.) before getting in the ring, even to spar.
That being said, you've already ordered gloves. Bag gloves are lighter than sparring/ competition gloves. Make sure you buy actual bag gloves for use on the heavy bag. As far as the 16 oz. gloves, those are very heavy, but they also provide additional padding to help protect you. My recommendation is that you practice technique with bag gloves on the heavy bag, and work on the basics. Then when you're ready to spar, start with the 16 oz. gloves with someone of equal experience, age and ability.
Then if you progress and feel more confident in your conditioning and defense, maybe move to the 14 oz.

I hope this helps, Reggie.

Thanks again for writing!

Regards,
Lian
