Question
hi there I'm 20 years old 6 foot 2, 209. i have been working on the heavy bag and doing massive running to condition myself. i need to find a place to put my conditioning to work and start training to become an amateur boxer. i live in Oklahoma where there isn't a golden gloves gym. i would like to find a gym and a trainer that would help me accomplish this dream but i don't know where i can find one. any help would be awesome

Answer
hey Levi,  this is the main problem with our sport, it is so unique that there are not a lot of gyms and some places simply do not have gyms near by. Your option is to fight "unattached" and train on your own or at a health club that has a heavybag... you need someone to help you train and work your corners... go to goldenglovesofamerica.com and send them an email asking for registration information ...once your registered you will start getting event info in the mail and you can train for certain fights you want to enter....you also might consider making a trip to the nearest golden gloves a once every couple of weeks for sparing if its not too far...check frachises on the website and see where the closest one is...
sorry there are not more options but that is one of the disadvantages to this sport... dont give up though, you can still do it but it will take some extra effort...

good luck

I can answer any questions related to boxing and training. I can help anyone prepare for professional or amateur bouts. My trainer/boss of 24 years is in the Golden Gloves Hall of Fame and trained the heavyweight champion of the world. Holyfield, Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Taylor, Billy Bridges, Frankie Randall just to name a few of the boxers who have passed thru the Southerns and/or trained at our gym.

Experience

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
