Question
Hi,
My name is Doug. I'm 13 years-old. I may be young, but i have taken a serious interest in boxing. How old do i have to be and what do i have to do to get into an amateur boxing career? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Doug,

Thanks for the question.

In order to box as an amateur in the USA, you need to register as an athlete with USA Boxing. Wherever you live, there is a Local Boxing Committee (LBC) that handles the amateur program in your area. To find out how to contact the LBC officials where you live, go to www.usaboxing.org, and click on the Membership link, then follow the directions to find the LBC officials in your area.

They can direct you toward registered amateur boxing gyms, and give you information about the local program. At age 13, you're old enough to box as an amateur (actually, 8 years is the minimum).

I hope this helps, Doug.
Thanks again for writing!

Regards,

Lian

I can answer questions regarding rules for both pro and amateur boxing; upcoming bouts; fight analysis/predictions; various other questions. I am an experienced amateur boxing official with USA Boxing (14 years) and I have completed a yearlong professional officials` clinic with the California State Athletic Commission.
