Boxing/getting a late start

Question
I am 28 years old 5'11 and about 215. When I was about 22 I started taking boxing lessons in  a good gym, however at that time my little boys where 3 and 1 and required a lot of attention, I dedcided to leave training after only about 3 months. Now my children are older, and my wife is very supportive of me giving it another go. Have there ever been any pros who were successful starting so late. The trainer that I went to years ago said I had great potential. I never played any real contact sports in school  and I am very healthy, so even though I am almost 29 I am  very rested and injury free. I love the sport always have always will, timing has just always been an issue. Sorry so long winded. Is it possible to have a descent career starting so late?

Answer
Hi Bryan,  Yes, you can stil have a career in boxing even starting at 28. If you have good potential then the chances are even better. You can fight until you are 34 as an amateur and then you have to either turn pro or retire. If you start now you could fight amateur for two years and get some good experience and build a name for yourself. When you turn pro you will advance faster with an amateur background. I believe life is short and if you have a dream you should go for it. Get started and see wat happens, you will never know if you don't try. You can fight pro usually until you are late 30's depending on your health.

good luck and fight hard.... remember this, the pros are all about pleasing the crowd.

I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
