Boxing/How much room do I need for a heavy bag?

Question
I am a 32 yr old male beginner, and I just bought a 70 lb boxing bag. Before I start drilling to set it up, I want to make sure that I do it right. Specifically, I would like to know the minimum size requirement for the space in which I hang it: I've just managed to clear a 9' x 9' square in my garage. Would that suffice? Also, should I hang the bag in the middle of that square, or closer to one of the corners?

Thanks!
Shahar

Answer
Hi Shahar,

It is really impossible for me to exactly answer your questions because I don't know how high your ceiling or hanging stand is, how long the bag and chain are and how big you. Also, If you will only punch the bag, or do you want to do some martial arts kicking also, - which will take more room for you to move away from the bag.

9' X 9' sounds like enough room to do whatever you want. I would hang it in the middle of the square, particularly if you will kick it. That will give it more room to swing and will also allow you to move around the bag, circling left and right.

If you place it close to a corner, the swinging bag can hit the wall and possible damage the wall or the bag. If you need to save space, that might be alright, but if you do I suggest you protect the walls with either a carpet or wood.

Good luck and I wish you good luck with your workouts and bag.

sincerely,
