Question
I'm around 143 lb. but i want to fight at 147 lb. my problem is that i don't believe I'm quick enough for my size and i want to greatly improve my speed considering I'm not in a very hard hitting weight division. I've only recently joined a boxing gym and this is my third week, but i am very dedicated and want to fight at least in the amateurs. can you give me some at home exercises that will increase my speed?

Answer
Hi Patrick,

Speed is all in the mechanics of your punches. Get in front of the mirror at home at throw each punch by itself in slow motion. Make sure form is correct. Gradually increase your speed until you are throwing as fast as you can. Do each punch the same way until you finish all punches. Then start adding two punches together in a combo, then 3 and so on until you get to a 10 punch combination. Make sure your form stays correct at top speed. Now, get some 5 pound weights and go thru the same routine keeping form. You are going to continue using the weights for a month to do the drill. I would do this 4 days a week. Do not do the drill without the weights until the end of the month. Only then will you do the drill without weights. This will increase your speed. If your not happy with your speed, you can do the drill again until your happy with your speed.

good luck
