Question
QUESTION: 1) If I just do the speed bad motion with dumb bells and NOT using a speed bag will I get same benefits if not better?  (I get the feeling that the speed bag was invented to help discipline since the bag keeps bouncing.)

2) Can I still practice upper cuts on a regular having without having to buy an upper cut heavy bag? Is there a punching technique I can apply to avoid wrist injury?

ANSWER: Of course you can do a speed bag motion without a bag, but I would not recommend the dumbells.  You can practice uppercuts just by shadowboxing.  Handwrapping is very important to avoid wrist and hand injuries.  Punching using your hand and wrist as a single unit is best to not injure your wrist but I would suggest let a trainer watch your techniques to avoid injury.

QUESTION: Thanks for your answers.  Much appreciated

One follow up question: Would even "light dumbells" cause injury/damage or somehow work against the goal of increase speed (using 5-7lb dumbells).  My thinking is this amount of resistance would contribute to strength and speed.

The reason why I ask is if I can actually get stronger workout without having to buy the speed bag and mount, I'd rather do that.

Thks again.

Answer
The movement for speed bag is not a natural exercise movement so be careful.  If you use light weight it may be okay but if it detracts from form then do not do it.  Certainly nothing heavier than what maybe a training glove would weigh.

Thanks,

Joe
