Boxing/how to start amateur boxing
Expert: Lian Shoemake - 8/26/2006
QuestionHello there.
I live in jersey city, NJ. I have had a passion to become a boxer since i was 12 but my parents wouldnt let me. Now i am 18 and i have a part time job, and go to high school(still)and i can finally decide for myself. I wanna know how i can start boxing (amateur). Do i need a personal trainer or can i train at a gym or even home and still be an amateur boxer? And how much does it cost, and how much time do i have to commit to it( will i need to quit my job).I tried to find local gyms but havent had any success, most of the gyms in Jersey city are in the richer states. What should i do?
Your help would be very much appreciated.
Thnx in advance.
AnswerHi Mohammad,
Thanks for the questions.
In order to compete as an amateur boxer, you'll need to register with USA Boxing. To do so, go to this web address and follow the directions:
http://www.usaboxing.org/10_1577.htm
You don't need a personal trainer, but you'll need to have a registered coach in your corner for all sanctioned bouts. When you get the registration information at the link I provided, you'll want to ask about where the registered gyms are in your area.
The amount of time you commit to training is an individual choice, but even most professional boxers have jobs, so that shou8d not be an obstacle.
Registration is around $45.00 for boxers.
I hope this helps, Mohammad.
Thanks again for writing!

Lian
