QuestionI'm a beginner and have just started my training. My weight at this point in time is 170 lbs. I was wondering what weight gloves I should buy for my sparring lessons and fights. Also, and ideas for speed bag and heavy bag would be beneficial. thank you.
AnswerHi Josh,
If you have just started your training, I assume you have a coach? If not, you NEED one. Unsupervisored sparring is not a good idea. If you do have a coach, I would ask him what gloves he/she might recommend. There are way too many styles, types and variations to specify the one "right pair" for you. that may also depend on hand size, etc. There might also be local specifications and limitations concerning all gear worn in the ring in your area, region or gym. Check that out if you are going to fight in sanctioned or organized bouts.
Actually, I wouldn't worry about what "weight" gloves you purchase for training ( bags ) Start with the highest quality you can afford. And get hand wraps also. Here are a few links

You ask "ideas for speed bag and heavy bag" ?? I am not sure what your specific question is on these but:
Yes you should use both in your training.
Start with medium size speed bags (8x11) for they are slower and easier to control. Here is a link to my website concerning many aspects of speed bag training.

For Heavy bag, If you are going to buy one that depends on where and how you will hang it, or if you need one that is "freestanding". Again many choices here. Anything under 120lbs would be Alright. 80-100lb would be about right.
