Question
Hi Mr Rose i love boxing and always have. Im to old to box now but have on and off for the last 20 years and still like to keep fit on the bag . Now 40ish i have been thinking of starting up a boxing gym, can you give me some advice on the pit falls like license and insurance and so on.  Hope you can help, thanks very much from steve.

Answer
Steve,  I would highly recommend getting in touch with Golden Gloves of Amercia (put it in a search engine and go to their website) about starting a franchise. Since Golden Gloves is a charity you can accept donations and get grants for your program. Plus you will have access to tons of information about running your gym. You will also be able to have tournaments and such with other gyms in your area. GG's stick together and help each other out. You will have insurance that covers the boxers if they get injured while training but it is limited to initial injury and not ongoing care, that is when there own insurance should take over... you should still have every boxer that comes in the door sign a waiver that states they understand the risks of boxing etc etc.. and will not hold the gym legally responsible etc etc.....  your trainers need to be certified by USA boxing...they will take a test once a year you can adminster at the gym yourself....this is not a must, but its highly recommended.... I recommend having a designated guests and parents viewing area roped off..."no one except boxers or coaches beyond this point for insurance reasons" ...this is for two reasons, the insuance you'll have only covers the boxers, also, you don't want parents back there trying to coach there kids, it drives the trainers crazy and makes the kids nervous.... start off with a list of gyms rules...lots of discipline in those rules too.. also list what happens when they are violated, make sure you stick to it because kids can take over a gym real quick, if you lose control it's hard to get it back.....thre is a lot to go over but I hope that I gave you a head start....
good luck and let me know if I can help further,

take care,

My trainer/boss of 24 years is in the Golden Gloves Hall of Fame and trained the heavyweight champion of the world. Holyfield, Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Taylor, Billy Bridges, Frankie Randall just to name a few of the boxers who have passed thru the Southerns and/or trained at our gym.

Experience

I have been in the sport of boxing since 1984. I started as a boxer and advanced quickly. I was lucky enough to have some of the best sparring in the country with 3 top ten pros in my very gym. I am fortunate enough to live near one of the better boxing programs in the country. We have cultivated our facility into the largest Amateur Boxing Gym in the country. In the mid 90's I became a trainer for Golden Gloves. I train amateur and pro fighters. I have worked in many corners at USA and Golden Glove tournaments. I have worked corners in pro bouts on HBO and ESPN cards. My friend, boss and coach is the former President of Golden Gloves and I trained under his tutelage.
