Boxing/i want to start a career as a boxing referee

Question
I want to become a boxing referee, and I wanted to know how I can get started on that?

Answer
Most pro referees do not consider refereeing as a career.  They are generally retired or do it along with their day jobs.  Almost all pro commissions require that an official have at least two, or more, years of amateur experience.  Amateur officials start out timekeeping and work their way into judging and, about a year after they have been registered and certified, start training as a referee.  Amateur officials do not get paid - it's all volunteer involvement.  I would first check with your state's pro boxing organization and see what they require.  If they want you to have amateur experience, please email me at mel@amateurboxing.com, tell me the city and state you live in, and I'll send you a contact to get you started.
