Boxing/What weight heavy bag

Question
I want to get a heavy bag for a female friend of mine. She has worked out in a boxing gym and is fairly strong. She is 5'5" and weighs 140. Is bigger better? Thanks, Carol

Answer
HI Carol,

Bigger might not necessarily be better in a heavybag. I don't think it is as important as the contact surface and stuffing method inside. If it is too big, with a very hard outer surface it can be painful to the extremity (fists, wrists, elbow or shoulder). Particularly in someone new who doesn't have correct punching form (fist and wrist position). If it is too big it also want have much movement. I would suggest staying with a 70 - 100 lb bag with a softer outer surface and an inner core for water. Similiar to this 80 lb. bag: http://www.ringside.com/DETAIL.ASPX?ID=24833

you can find many more at: http://www.ringside.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=2380
and http://store.titleboxing.com/heavy-bags-water-bags.html

Good luck with your purchase and training.
