Question
Joe,
I am 28 years old and have been boxing for about 2 years. I have only had two amatuer bouts. I am 6'2 and 198lbs so I currently box as a heavyweight. I started boxing late after playing college football for 4 years. I wanted to ask if it is necessary to lift weights as a boxer? My coach is old school and suggests that we do not lift weights. However, we do hundrers of push ups, pull ups, and other various strenght exercises. I do not plan on veturing into the superheavyweight division so do you think lifting is something I should add to my training regimen?

Answer
I am an advocate of weight lifting as I do not like when my opponent has any advantage over me including strength.  Just make sure that you box enough, because what happens allot is if you weight lift all of the time and you do not practice boxing routines, you gain strength but lose skill.
