Also, what happened to the boys' mother?

It was pretty much established that they lived in the Los Angeles, California metro area.  Most of the references to Greg's affinity for Wes Parker (an L.A. Dodger), his love of surfing, and various external shots showed that it was in the Los Angeles area.

The boys' mother died, but the reason was never divulged.  Bobby was also shown in the pilot episode, gazing at his deceased mother, telling Mr. Brady how much he'd miss her.
