Question
my 83yo mother who was diagnosed with ca breast over a year ago and then more recently with lung lesions now has brain lesions x 3 the largest being 3cm as evidenced on mri. her onc. is talking radiation therapy, she has been commenced on dexamethesone. I would appreciate your opinion as I am concerned the radiation will do more damage at this stage and create so much unnecessary suffering. further, what is your opinion of the use of temoxolomide in this case. thankyou

Answer
No the radiation will NOT make more damage of any consequence or create suffering in the future. Her problem is her cancer not the suggested radiation therapy. However, radiation therapy - or any other therapy for that matter - can unfortunately not cure her. What it can do is decrease symptoms for a time and prolong survival time. Temoxolomide (Temodar) is mainly used for PRIMARY brain tumors while these are secondary. Even if it works I doubt it offers any real advantage over radiation actually. It does NOT offer any cure either! In primary brain tumors Temodar is always used TOGETHER with radiation therapy, often after surgery.
