Question
My brother has MRI done. Result sent to him with finding of mass lesion in right basal ganglia, 2.8 x 2.5 cm with blooming artifact. This was one of the tests done when he was sent to ER when he collapsed and had shortness of breath. Can you explain this result to me. He has an appointment to see his doctor about this MRI result but I am worried and cannot wait what his doctor will say. My brother is in antother country outside the USA.

Answer
Your brother seems unfortunately to have a brain tumor. The location of his lesion is not good from a surgical point of view. Based on what you have written I have not enough information to evaluate the precise nature of his lesion but it is most probable that it is a tumor and the risk that it is malignant (cancerous) is rather big but not a certainty. Apart from surgery the size of his lesion would permit radiological treatment with the so called GammaKnife or proton beams. If that is possible for other reasons is however at present not sure. Please do keep me posted!
