Question
my 56 year old brother has stage 4 brain cancer. it has metastasized into his brain stem, lung (left lung was removed)now in right lung and also in the spleen.i know he is terminal,he has also lost his sight. they have tried the gamma knife and radiation but it did not help.i want to know how the end will be and what to expect.will he be in pain?incontinent?unable to speak?recognize people.eat or drink?he does not want hospice. he is coming home to my house and i will be his caregiver.i just do not know what to expect.

Answer
He will become more and more confused. There may be stroke like symptoms and even epileptic fits. He will sleep more and more and become unable to take care of himself including hygiene, toilet visits, eating & drinking etc. Eventually he will drift into a coma and then pass away. There will be little pain - if any. Predicted survival time can be measured in months or even shorter. Question: Did not his cancer start in his lung and has spread from there to his brain etc.? It is VERY uncommon for primary brain tumors to spread to other parts of the body!
