Question
Hello,
My daughter has metastatic melanoma and was on interferon.  They have now discovered 2 tubors in the basal ganglia so are inoperable.  They want to do 2 kinds of radiation.  Gamma knife and "whole head"  but can not seem to determine which should come first.  They would like to start as soon as possible the Right side is 3.4cmx2.8cm and the Left side tumor is 2.2cm x 2.5cm.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Answer
No one really knows which is best, but since malignant melanomas usually
are not very sensitive to conventional radiation therapy ("whole head" here) I would start with something that I know at least will work here. So I would start with the GammaKnife here. However the one on the right side is in size close to the upper limit of what is possible to treat with the GammaKnife so there is a certain urgency in starting treatment.
