Question
QUESTION: My 63yr old father was diagnosed w/brain stem gliom tumor and has been treated since 02/08.  His deterioration has been so rapid, he is barely able to walk, his voice is a whisper and he has lost alot of weight.  What should i expect at this point as far as how long he has to live and kind of inspiration to i offer him

ANSWER: Do you know the GRADE of his tumor since brain tumor prognosis is closely linked to the grade of the tumor? From your description it is likely that his tumor is of a high grade with a poor prognosis and with a rather rapid growth and therefore a rather short survival time. But I would be able to give you a better answer if indeed you do know the grade.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The grade of the tumor was a 4 in march of 2008 and I know that there growth in the last MRI in august of 2008.

Answer
Ok. I see. That is indeed a high grade - the highest - so unfortunately his prognosis is very bad - especially so with that location. It is then not surprising that his deterioration is so fast. Knowing these facts I very much doubt that he will live much longer than a year from diagnosis and it may be even shorter. Honestly I do not know how to inspire him in this situation. The only things you can offer him are support, comfort and consolation - as much as possible. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
