Brain Tumors - Mom-age 82 Glioblastoma Multiforme

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 10/12/2009

Question
My Mom age 82 was diagnosed in April 09 with this horrific cancer.
She had surgery in July to remove a temporal tumor on the right
side. The surgeon said he was "aggressive". That was all he said.
The radiation oncologist spoke to the family and said if nothing was done, mom would only have a few months. She opted to try the
6 weeks of radiation and chemo(temodar). She wasn't to bad initially and then got progressively worse.  She was admitted to the hospital last thursday and was put in the IICU with extremely
low blood pressure.  She was given 3 series of platelets along
with some blood.  Tons of intravenous fluid and is still receiving
the IV drip. Her blood pressure is better but she is not eating/
drinking liquids. Everything taste bad to her.  She doesn't speak
much and is very weak.  Is constantly sleeping.  The oncologist said once her counts are up he will take an MRI to see what is
going on.  What do you think is going on and what can we expect
going forward?  I don't think she will be back home.
Thank you.
Dottie

Answer
I always try to give honest & truthful answers here - which some people have criticized me for, but I have to assume that people who ask questions want truthful and not sugarcoated answers bordering on straight lies - so I have to tell you that surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy of glioblastoma multiforme tumors of the brain at best only can temporarily relieve the patient of symptoms to some extent (while also causing some side effects) and prolong survival time, also to some extent. That is all. These tumors so far are always incurable and fatal. When such a patient sleeps all the time the end is near. The patient will then drift into a coma and then pass away. Here there seems also to be some bad hematological side effects which hardly will help the situation. Her rather advanced age will not be of any help either. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
