Brain Tumors - lung cancer and brain tumor

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 11/3/2009

Question
We have limited info: 10 days ago b-i-l had tumor removed from base of brain. 3 days ago biopsy, x-ray, mri, etc. and test results indicate small cell carcinoma in lung and rib cage; dark spot on liver as yet unidentified/undiagnosed.  We're 900 miles away and can't get clear picture of pronosis from anyone (don't want to talk about it).  Chemo and radiation are planned, but what is reality of long-term survival, and what is possilbe prognosis?  Should we make a trip ASAP?

Answer
Well if this is a small cell lung cancer that has spread to the brain - which happens rather often with these cancers - and perhaps also to the liver and rib cage then the situation is indeed very serious and the probable survival time even with full treatment including radiation therapy and chemotherapy can be measured at most in months, maybe less. Since it already is a stage 4 cancer (since it has spread to at least one other organ, the brain) it is at present incurable and as most lung cancers especially the stage 4 lung cancers also eventually fatal. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
