Question
Hi, my best friend has recently been diagnosed with a Glioma(brain tumour)grade 4. People keep telling her to be positive, but at the moment things look bleak, she is young (late 30s)and very healthy. She has had the tumour removed,(frontal lobe near the optic nerve) but has been told it will re -grow. She is due to start chemo and radiation. The statisitics look depressing, is there anything to be gained by her age and previous excellent health and good life(previously a non smoker, non drinker and took plenty exercise)?

I need to know the full picture so I cangive her some positive thoughts along with all the negative. 2 years life expectancy is a statistic. Is the writing 'on the wall'as it were?

It seems so hard to bear, I am finding it difficult to know how best I can support her throught his time, its a delicate balance to engineer. I do not want to provide false hope, but it does seem so hopeless.

Thank you for your time. I am so grateful.

Answer
Unfortunately not much if anything can be gained by previous health, age, good life etc. Malignant brain tumors grade 4 (IV) are all at present hopeless. Survival time with full therapy (surgery, radiation therapy & chemotherapy) is at most 1 to 2 years. Without therapy MUCH shorter. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
