Question
We just found out that my father in law has lung cancer and a brain tumor. He has had the lung cancer for about 5 years. He never told anyone. He is refusing treatments. He is 65. We were told he has Squamous cell carcinoma.(not sure if I am spelling it right) I have seen the x-rays of his lungs and its like he is using half of each lung. He was a heavy smoker. What will happen if this goes untreated? The tumor in his head I am not sure where it is but I do know that it is inside the brain. How long will he live? He has told of us that he is ready to go. I feel bad because we had to put him in a nursing home because he lost use of his right arm and leg, they say its do to the tumor in his brain. I live out of state so I can't always be with him but I was just up there for 10 days with him and sometimes he get confused and can't remember things.
Thank you for you time.

Answer
If the information is correct then he would not live much longer even with treatment. Lung cancers have in general a very bad prognosis. Even worse when it has spread like this to the brain - common with lung cancers. Without treatment he can probably live only some more weeks! Treatment can - somewhat - prolong his survival tone and lessen symptoms. That is all! Yes his right side paralysis has probably to do with his brain tumor. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
