Brain Tumors - Brain Tumor - Stage 4

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/25/2009

Question
My father-in law has recently had a brain tumor removed and the biopsy has come back malignant. We have been told it is very aggressive and is at stage 4. He seems fine in himself and looks well which makes it very hard to believe. The doctors have said they will try chemo and possibly radiotherapy once he has had pysio to get him walking again. They will not give a survival time they just said probably months more than years. Can you give any further info or advice/help?

Answer
Brain tumors usually do not have stages so what was meant was probably that it was a GRADE 4 tumor which fits with the rest of the description. In that case his drs. unfortunately are quite correct. A grade 4 malignant brain tumor has usually a survival time of around one year from primary treatment regardless of  therapy. This has not changed in the last 30 years or so. There is at present unfortunately no hope of any cure or survival. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
