Brain Tumors - Gbm grade III

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/30/2009

Question
Hello, I’m writing to you to present the situation of Nikolaos Pouliakas my sister's husband. He was suffering some severe headaches for sometime and a CT performed on the 27.04.2009 reveal that he has a tumor in the right parietal lobe. Doctors in Thessaloniki  , Greece operated him on the 29.04.2009 and they removed the tumor. The bad news is that the biopsies report confirmed the doctor’s first assumption, that the tumor was a grade III GBM.
When they studied the MRI performed after the surgery, the doctors where very pleased because they said that they performed a maximal resection and there is no sign of the tumor.
Right now the patient made a spectacular recovery and resumes his normal life.
The MRI made after 1 month from the surgery was also good, no signs of the tumor. This week will begin the RT and temodal treatment.
Since then we are all looking on the internet and the perspective are not so good, concerning this particular type of brain tumor, because as a read in many reports the chances of long term survival are very poor.
My question's to you:
What shall we do next, after this treatment?
The doctors that operated him told that in Sweden he can get the best oncology care. Can you tell me some good hospitals or clinics that are specialized in this?
I’m waiting for your response. Thank you.

Answer
Unfortunately the treatment results of this kind of brain tumour is the same all over the world. I can not offer any better results here in Sweden even though he as an EU citizen from Greece has the same rights as a Swede to come here for treatment. Apart from surgery, radiation therapy & chemotherapy (Temodal) there is at present nothing else that we can do. Unfortunately your assumption is correct. His prognosis is very bad. If you still want to contact any dr. here in Sweden I can only suggest my own old Alma Mater, the Karolinska University Hospital here in Stockholm. You should talk to the department of neurosurgery. The phone no to the hospital exchange is 0046851770000.
