Question I have been diagnosed with a 2x2x1.5 meningioma in the parietal lobe, up against the sagittal sinus and in the posterior third. One neurosurgeon does not want to operate because he said being in the posterior third up against the sag sinus is not good, and I have symptoms, in the back of my head which he said sounds like the brain is rerouting so surgery would be an unknown because of the rerouting. This dr. reccomends stereotactic radiation, and that sounded great until I started thinking reading about it and scared myself!! I understand that swelling can happen at any time and I am afraid of bringing on dementia, I have heard of people having the radiation and then having swelling and surgery is done because of the swelling? Another neurosurgeon tells me he can operate, no problem. If I went with that Dr. would he just schedule surgery or would he look in depth to my particular case and then perhaps rule out surgery for the same reason as the first Dr.? Hope all this makes sense. Thank you for any light you can shed on my problem!! Sue
Answer Are the measurements of your tumor that you have given me in cm or in inches? If in cm your meningioma is ideal for radiological treatment with the so called GammaKnife. The brain swelling due to the treatment in that situation a very minor problem and is usually treated successfully with a temporary steroid treatment. Surgery ALWAYS has risks - usually much bigger than this radiological treatment. If I were you I would chose the radiological treatment without any hesitation! I have recently finished 2 months of radiation therapy myself for prostate cancer. The GammaKnife treatment is an affair of a very short burst of radiation! Good luck whatever you chose!
