Brain Tumors - boron neutron radiation

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/20/2009

Question
I have a friend son whose had all sorts of treatment for Osteosarcoma. His doctor at MDAnderson Cancer Institute has recommended a radiation hospital in Norway. The cancer is in subcutaneous tissue, soft tissue, and bone. None of the mets are in vital organs or the lung.
What is your thought on this treatment for osteosarcoma.

Sue Andresen
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
USA

Answer
Well it is potentially very promising. But still rather experimental and the only places where experiments and clinical use are going on are Finland, Japan & Norway. His tumor seems "ideally" located for this kind of treatment (pardon my choice of word). Besides in this situation where most other things have been tried I do not see that he has much of a choice! AND if MD Anderson recommends it I'm hardly in a position to contradict that! So I think he should try it if possible!
