Brain Tumors - glioma

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/16/2009

Question
sir my wife was diagnosed with high grade thalamic glioma a month ago, doctors have ruled out any surgery as if it is very big in size, is there any treatment and what are the surviving chances

Answer
I'm sorry to read about her - and your - problems! A high grade glioma has unfortunately at present a bad prognosis regardless of any and every treatment - even a combination of surgery, radiation therapy & chemotherapy. In her case the described location of her tumour would make surgery VERY difficult or even impossible. If it also is big it would definitely be impossible to use surgery. Unfortunately that would also make unconventional radiological treatment with the so called GammaKnife impossible. Conventional radiation therapy can be used even in combination with chemotherapy but such treatment can only slow down the process to some extent - as indeed only even the combination with surgery would do! I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
