Question Hi, wonder if you could make things a bit clearer for me,my brother has had melanomas removed on his back and leg, then after 5 months he had terrible pains in his stomach, he went to to a colonoscopy and scan and it was clear, then he went and did a pet scan and it had spread to his spleen which he had removed in March 2009, the doctor said it hadnt spread, after two months he had pains in his head and went and did a MRI where they found melanomas in the brain, he started radiotherapy on Monday,22nd June 2009 he has to have 10 sessions of 10 minutes each.(he doesnt use a mask as it has spread too much) He says he doesnt have much taste, he has terrible headaches,is dizzy and scared of falling, today his hip was sore. The counselor said that he cant get better and at anytime he could lose his sight, hearing, movement etc. Could you please tell me what we can expect. Thank you.
Answer Malignant melanomas are usually not very sensitive to radiation therapy or chemotherapy. So his radiation therapy must be regarded as a desperate measure of last resort. In this situation he unfortunately can only be expected to survive at most for a few months or even much shorter. The moment it was found to have spread to his spleen he was a stage 4 cancer case which at present is incurable. That it has spread to his brain too is even worse. Unfortunately I can not offer any hope. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
