Question
Dear, Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D.

I have written to you in the past and you have been honest.  I have read your post regularly over the past 3 years and all your information has been right on point.  Here is an update on my 41 year old male friend who was diagnosed with a grade 2 or 3 brain stem glioma.  After 3 years of battling this disease my very good friend has been in the hospital for the last month.  He only has use of his right arm, he has difficulty hearing and seeing, he can not speak, he will soon be placed on a feeding tube because his muscles are so weak they will not let him swallow, and he is now incontinent.  Some days he knows me and other days he does not.  The doctors have advised his family that he probably has 3 months to live.  I guess I have my answer already, however, would you think he would have less time than the doctors have given.  What is most disturbing is that I think he knows what is happening but can not communicate his feelings.  He doesn't appear to be in any pain but to see him in this condition is most upsetting.  I know he will sleep more often then eventually slip into a coma....and pass.  Can you speculate if 3 months is accurate?  Thank you for your consideration.

Answer
THANKS! It is impossible to be precise in such a prediction unfortunately! It may be accurate but then again his survival time may be shorter but also longer. Impossible to tell in advance. That it will be AROUND 3 months is probable. I understand that it is most upsetting, however to a large extent I do not think he is (fully) aware of his situation if that is any comfort to you.
