QUESTION: My father was diagnosed last week with stage iv cancer. the primary is his lung and the cancer traveled to his brain. the first signs that something was wrong with my dad was his tongue had gotten numb and he had a hard time speaking his words. this has devestated our family and i don't know how to cope with the fact i will be losing my dad.  he is having his fifth full brain radiation today and i want to know what is my father's life expectency at this point.

ANSWER: I'm very sorry to read about your father's - and your - problems! Unfortunately even with radiation therapy he can at most survive a few months maybe much shorter. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!

QUESTION: How do I know when it is my father's time. What do I look for. What kind of symptoms will he have?

Answer
It will be his brain metastases that will kill him and also give him his principal symptoms. There may be more stroke like symptoms (as were those you have already described) and even epileptical fits. He will become more and more confused and sleep more and more. When he sleeps all the time his end will be near. He will then drift into a coma and then pass away. There will be little pain - if any.
