Question I have a 16 year old brother that was diagnosed last yer 08/07/08 @ children's hospital in New Orleans, LA. Brandon was a health quarterback, honor student & a young man with his life all planned out. Since then he has gone through radiation 5 days a week and 6 chemo treatments. We were getting good news that he WAS responding good to the TX, it had shrunk almost 80%. At the end of April his MRI showed swelling again. My question is how long can some live with type of tumor? Will he be able to have a normal life again one day?? Can someone PLEASE help me find some kind of answers?! I am lost.
Answer I'm sorry to read about his - and your - problems! ALL malignant grade 3 to 4 brain tumors have at present unfortunately a hopeless prognosis. All what treatment including surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy can accomplish is a temporary relief of symptoms and an extended survival time. At present they are all incurable and eventually fatal. The survival time depends mainly on the grade of the tumor - which seems to be somewhat uncertain here (not that uncommon) - so a grade 3 tumor case may with treatment survive around 2 years or in rare cases 3 years. A grade 4 case will usually survive - with treatment - 1 to maybe (very much maybe)2 years. So unfortunately I can not really promise him any future life. This is something his drs. should have told you! I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
