Question
Hello,
My brother was operated with posterior fossa pilocytic astrocytoma on 02/09. The tumor was totally removed and also a follow up MRI scan after 3 months shows no visible tumor. He has joined his work and has no major problem other then slight imbalance while walking. He performs yoga for 30 min a day. Can I request you to advise what needs to be done from our side to fight the tumor coming back. Also would appreciate if you can let me know what we can expect in future(Life expectancy, reoccurrence etc)

Answer
If his tumour has been completely removed his prognosis should be good if the diagnosis is correct and his risk of a relapse should more or less disappear after some years - probably less than 5! In this case primary treatment is surgery though stereotactic radiation therapy may be an alternative (for small lesions). I do not think any radiation therapy or chemotherapy will be necessary here. What is important is that he has regular check ups including MRI brain scans in order to look out for any relapse. Otherwise no treatment is necessary. His risk of a relapse is probably small. And if no such problems appear he should have a normal life span. From your side no other things can be done. His imbalance is normal with this location and after this kind of surgery. It may become better over time. Good luck!
