Question
Hello Doctor,
My mom was recently admitted in the hospital for Pneumonia treatment.She was choking during swallowing,coughing while eating food etc. The doctor said that it was the first step of Pneumonia.
Now she has a food pipe inserted through which she has food & water.
The doctor has also told us to use a suction pump to remove the mucus which gets accumulated everyday.My question is why does so much mucus get accumulated? Is there any medicine to lessen it?

Answer
Due to her brain tumor her normal mechanisms for clearing her throat of it are inactivated. Unfortunately the only available treatment method is the suction pump. It is not ideal but it is what we have.
