Brain Tumors/Astrocytoma grade2 is back after 13 years

Question
So my husband was diagnosed 13 1/2 years ago with an astrocytoma grade two tumor.  He had a grand mall seizure which is how we discovered it.  He went through a full course of radiation therapy and we were told 13 years ago that he would not be able to have radiation thereapy again.  He tumor was in his right front lobe.  He has surpased his life expectancy.  However we just found out it is back.  Same area only it is the size of a raisin instead of a golf ball.  It is close to the part of the brain that controls motor so I know that surgery is not a good option.  I would imagine that in 13 years things have improved.  What do think are his best options, and can he have radiation again after all of these years?  What do you think his survial percentage is?

Thank You so much!

Nancy

Answer
Yes conventional radiation therapy is not an option and surgery is not a good one either - if at all. However stereotactic radiation therapy of this rather small lesion MAY (no promises) - GammaKnife or proton beams - still be a possibility. Discuss that with his doctors.
