Question
Hi,

My mother has just been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, it is in her both sinus, into her right eye (of which she is now blind in and the lid is permanantly closed) very near her left optic nerve and spread back to near her brain stem, her oncologist has said there is nothing that can be done for her and possibly only has a couple of months to live, how on earth has it got to this state before anyone has picked up on it.

Answer
No tumour of this size can exist without causing symptoms - in fact symptoms will appear LONG before any tumour reaches a state like this! But has your mother complained of such symptoms earlier? If so when and for what? Without knowing that I can not evaluate the situation. Unfortunately I have experience of patients that avoid going to doctors with symptoms that frighten them. And if they do not go nothing can or will be found.
