Question
Hi, We are coming to Brazil in january 2008 for 3 weeks. We wondered if you can give us any advice on things to do and the type of clothing to take with us. We are both in our 60s. Thank you in anticipation.

Answer
Hi Bob:
That is one place in Brazil I know nothing about. Though I hear it is very beautiful. Some advice -- it will be smoking hot there in January. Carnaval time begins on Feb 3rd or so, so you might get some nice, tourist designed Carnaval parties to go too. Do attend them. Just dont dress like a millionaire, unless it is a closed party and not open to the "povao" (po-VOWN) -- meaning, "the people". Being in your 60s, and not knowing your health and level of actdivity or vacation plans, I would just tell you to drink PLENTY of water. NEVER drink water from the tap unless the hotel MANAGEMENT says it is okay. Always drink bottled water. NEVER order a drink with ice cubs in it, in case it comes with tap water ice.

NEVER wear socks with sandals on the beach, you will be pegged for a tourist. Carry with you no more than the amount of money with you that you can bare to lose if you were ever robbed. I dont anticipate that in Natal; its not Rio, but better to be safe than sorry.

Bom voyage.
