Brazil/History of Fashion in Brazil

Question
Hi,

Im doing a project on the modern history of fashion in Brazil!  My portion of the project will cover mostly fashion post industrial revolution and westernization (so late 19th century to the 20th century).  Ive been doing a lot of research and there is plenty out there about the general history but nothing on the traditional dress or history of fashion in brazil.  Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Crystal

Answer
When we talk about traditional dress in Brazil, we mostly talk about the Afro-Brazilian style in the northeast, mainly Bahia -- http://uk.encarta.msn.com/media_461526965_761569657_-1_1/traditional_brazilian_d... -- which are African inspired, and Rio Grande do Sul style -- known as Gaucho, also popular in the rural farm areas of Argentina and Uruguay. http://www.gauchoclothes.com/Gaucho.html

If you were looking into a history of these things, then you would be better of focusing on these two clothing styles, and where they originated.  Bahia is the birth place of colonial Brazil and RG do Sul is old world German.  Those are the two most promiment "traditional" clothign styles that are very prominent to this day. That's a good starting point.
