How long does it take to drive from Rio to Bahia?  Is it safe?  Sounds like there are lovely places to see along the way.

The coastal trip from Rio to Bahia is very beautiful. It takes around 20 hours to drive from Rio to Bahia (around 1100 miles). But schedule few more days for some stops on the way (such as, Porto Securo and Ilheus).

For safety reason, drive only during the day, stay in the main roads, don't travel alone and have somebody that can speak Portuguese.

Another great option is to take a bus, which is safer, cheaper and faster.
