Brazil/living in brasil

Question
Hi Edison,
I was in born in Brasil but have lived in the US since I was one. Now I am 47. I am contemplating to live in Brasil with my son and husband for 6 months while house sitting in Ceara. Can you tell me of any complications I might face in getting visas for my family? Would I have a problem having dual citizenship? Four years ago when I was considering a trip to Brasil I was scolded by the Brasilian embassy in NYC  for never having voted . I was told that I am considered a Brasilian citizen in Brasil and that it is my duty to vote. I will probably have other questions later.
Many thanks,
Regina

Answer
Hello Regina,

You should not have any problem in going to Brazil. You were born in Brazil, so, you are Brazilian and nobody can take this right away from you. Also, your son could request Brazilian citizenship and your husband should easily get a visa and/or citizenship. Brazil recognizes dual citizenship and the US doesn't enforce the single one.

The voting issue should not cause any problem to you. If the Brazilian consulate in NYC gives you hard time, hire a local Brazilian lawyer and fight for your rights. A suggestion: most Brazilians bureaucrats have a "love" or "hate" behavior, so be nice and calm with them.

Good luck and have fun in Brazil.
