Brazil/paying in Brazil

Question
Hi Edison,

My Fiance and I are going to Brazil for our honeymoon this summer and we are organising it ourselves.  We have found a few places to stay online but they are asking us to fax credit card details, along with the security number on the back of the card and also passport copies.  I don't feel comfortable with doing this, is it usual to ask for this info?

Many thanks

Ruth

Answer
Hello Ruth,

The additional information is to verify that you really own the card, since the use of stolen or clone (create another card using your numbers, but not name) credit cards is a big problem for hotels and other business in Brazil.

Usually is not a major concern to provide this information, since most credit cards have insurance policies against invalid charges.

However, if you still don't feel comfortable, my recommendation is to reserve your hotel via a travel agency or the site of an international hotel chain, such as Sheraton or Hilton.

Have a wonderful honeymoon in Brazil!
