Question
Hi,
I have been travelling three times a year for the last six years to see my Brazilian girlfriend in Rio de Janeiro. I am a writer and want to make my base in Rio rather than England or the US where I am now. I only have a travel visa for three months at a time but would like to spend from six months at a time in Rio to complete my projects. Is there a way to extend a visa?

Answer
A couple of weeks before your 90 days is up, you can go to the Policia Federal nearest to where you are staying and extend for 90 days more. Then you have to leave and stay out of the country for 6 months. If you overstay, you pay a fine of about R$8 per day (up to a total of about R$800), which should not effect your ability to enter again (although if you don't pay on exit, you will have to on your next entry).
