Brazil/Opening a Bank Account in Brazil

Question
Hi Sandra:

I'm a regular traveler to Brazil. I obtained a CPF card on my last trip in April 2011. Would it be possible for me to open a personal checking account or apply for a Brazilian credit card .... with Banco Do Brazil or any reputable Brazilian bank. I would appreciate any advice you can give me

Answer
No, nowadays (the law changed a while back) you generally can't open a bank account without permanent residency (and the documents and ID numbers that are issued when you become one). That said, as you may know, most everything in Brazil works on personal relationships, and who knows what your best buddy the bank branch manager might be willing to do for you.
