So you are saying she will be ok going through customs?? i have created a sales receipt through Microsoft Word 2003. what about a DVD external burner that i got her as well? do i have to just provide the receipt on it? the laptop is more than $500 US dollars

I am not saying that she would not have problems through customs. You could create a receipt for less than $500 for laptop and DVD burner. Also ask you friend to put the DVD burner and laptop in a separate pieces of luggage. Don't include boxes and wrapping plastic bags. Everything should look "very" used.
