Brazil/Tours and what to see in Rio

Question
My husband and I will be arriving in Rio on January 18th. 2005 to join a cruise tour on the 20th.  We would like to see some of the sights that the tour (7 hours of the highlights of Rio)  will not be showing us, like things that are off the beaten path, etc.  What do you suggest and do you know of a person who gives private tours for a day and speaks English?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks, Lu

Answer
Sorry, it took me a while to get to you.  Been on the road. If you want off the beaten path tours of Rio, I suggest you contact this man:
CARLOS ROQUETTE, former Brazilian federal judge, does cultural tours, historical tours, bossa nova tours, samba dance lesson tours...fairly high end, in Rio, 011-55-21-3322-4872 or cell: 9911-3829 or culturalrio@ig.com.br. If you have a hard time getting to him, email me at Rapoza@igc.org.  Carlos speaks English fluently.

Also, I advice you to read this before going to Rio:
