AboutElyse Grau Expertise I can answer any questions about baking. The only thing I'm not too good at is baking pies, nor do I know much about high altitude baking.
Experience I have been baking for over 30 years. One of my hobbies is creating recipes, most of those for baked goods. I made my own wedding cake. Currently I prefer to bake healthier things. I use a lot of whole wheat and other whole grain flours, and prefer to use less sugar or sugar substitutes in my baking. I do a lot with fruit.
Question I have tried making my own dog treats, I am still not sure how long to dehydrate to make sure they do not get moldy or to dry. Any suggestions on how to know and I have not been able to find out how much of vitamin e or vitamin a to use in my recipe to preserve them. I seem to be having so much trouble can you help?
Answer Karen:
They need to be totally dry. Let one cool and then break it. If it snaps (or if it's really hard to break) then it is probably dry enough. You can't really over-dry them for dogs, so better to err on the drier side. Adding vitamin A won't do anything. Vitamin E will give it a little longer shelf life, but not much. You can freeze them for longer storage. You can also add rosemary, and garlic will help preserve them as well. How much E to add depends on the size of the batch. Buy the liquid type, I think about a dropper full for a 1 pound batch is about right.
