About Elyse Grau
Expertise
I can answer any questions about baking. The only thing I'm not too good at is baking pies, nor do I know much about high altitude baking.

Experience
I have been baking for over 30 years. One of my hobbies is creating recipes, most of those for baked goods. I made my own wedding cake. Currently I prefer to bake healthier things. I use a lot of whole wheat and other whole grain flours, and prefer to use less sugar or sugar substitutes in my baking. I do a lot with fruit.

Bread & Pastries - Yeast intolerance

Expert: Elyse Grau - 5/14/2009

Question
Ive been told that im intolerant to yeast . And i love bread . I managed to find unbleached wheat flour bread and im not sure if there is yeast in it . Any one know the answer ?

Answer
Luana

There is yeast in any sandwich/bakery bread, including rolls and hamburger buns. "Quick breads", which are more cake-like (ex. zucchini bread, date nut bread) do not contain yeast, but aren't the kinds of things you usually find in the grocery store. Biscuits don't usually have yeast in them, but some ("angel biscuits" for example) will.

That said, there are many types of yeast. Different varieties are also used in beer and some wine production. Other products may contain "nutritional" yeast (usually vegetarian foods).
