About Elyse Grau
Expertise
I can answer any questions about baking. The only thing I'm not too good at is baking pies, nor do I know much about high altitude baking.

Experience
I have been baking for over 30 years. One of my hobbies is creating recipes, most of those for baked goods. I made my own wedding cake. Currently I prefer to bake healthier things. I use a lot of whole wheat and other whole grain flours, and prefer to use less sugar or sugar substitutes in my baking. I do a lot with fruit.

Bread & Pastries - yeast

Expert: Elyse Grau - 6/2/2009

Question
How long can you store yeast? is it any good after expired date? what will happen if used after  expired date?

Answer
How long it will keep depends on where you store it. If kept in the refrigerator it should keep up to a year - and may be good beyond the expiration date on the package.

On the other hand, if stored open, in the cupboard, it probably won't last more than a month or so.

To test the yeast, dissolve the amount specified in the recipe in 1/4c of warm (105) water and let sit for 5-10 minutes. It should
get creamy looking.
