About Elyse Grau
Expertise
I can answer any questions about baking. The only thing I'm not too good at is baking pies, nor do I know much about high altitude baking.

Experience
I have been baking for over 30 years. One of my hobbies is creating recipes, most of those for baked goods. I made my own wedding cake. Currently I prefer to bake healthier things. I use a lot of whole wheat and other whole grain flours, and prefer to use less sugar or sugar substitutes in my baking. I do a lot with fruit.

Bread & Pastries - Decorating bread top

Question
I'm making a quick bread for an entry in the State Fair with a theme of Baking for the Cure, Susan G. Komen, and would like to put the breast cancer logo on top of the cake.  Do you have any suggestions on how to do that?  Could I carve out a portion of the top of the bread and replace with a fondant logo?  Can you dye fondant a light pink color?  Thanks for any ideas.

Answer
Joyce:
If you want pink, then fondant or icing would probably be your best bet. You can dye fondant any color you want, and can also buy it already colored. You probably wouldn't have to carve out anything, unless you wanted to, but it would be tricky. Some kind of candy might also work, I don't know off hand what might be pink, maybe jelly beans or life savers. The only concern I have about these solutions is that frosting seems out of place on a bread, and I don't know what the judging criteria is, but I imagine taste is important, so keep that in mind.

If you can sacrifice the bright pink color, I'm thinking maybe some pink cream-cheese filling, or even a little reserved plain batter dyed pink could be "painted" or spooned on top before baking. That way the taste would be more compatible. Good luck with it!
