Question
My fiance recently left and wants to maintain a relationship with my two children, age 13 and 7. It was a 2 1/2 yr relationship and my  7 yr old son thinks of my ex has his father as he has never met his bio dad and knows nothing about him.  My son wants to see him too as they were quite bonded.  I am struggling with what to do.

Answer
Hi Ali,
How about a 3rd party to allow the visitation to occur?  It's very difficult for children when the people that they look to - break up (just as if it were a divorce).  But, it is very important for your son to know that this is over and that the 2 of them can remain friends, but the relationship is going to change (if this is really over) if there are doubts - I would postpone that conversation.  But, I don't see anything wrong with a little contact between the 2 especially since that will make your son not feel as though he was "left."  Good luck through this difficult time.  Warmest Wishes, Erica
